Understanding the Double Burden of Disease: Need for Research and Medical Ethics for Effective Patient Management
- Globally, the leading cause of mortality has been attributed to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) (World Health Organization, 2020) accounting for 74% of deaths reported in 2019 (WHO, 2020). More importantly, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ebola, Monkey Pox, and Marburg outbreaks the vulnerability of the healthcare systems of many developing countries like Ghana was exposed.
Today, developing countries and most countries in Africa are being faced with a double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such that these have become significant contributors to disease burden as compared to some years past were morbidity, mortality and disability were mainly attributable to only communicable diseases (WHO, 2010; Ghana Health Service, 2014). Amidst all these, research remains relatively poor in our part of the world.

Overview
Course Description
This training is put together to create awareness of the double burden of disease and the need to involve all avenues possible including a one-health approach, ethics, and research for better patient management and public health. Seasoned professionals (including researchers, infectious disease experts, veterinary medicine professionals, NCD gallant especially of chronic kidney disease, and experts in medical and research ethics and jurisprudence) have been profiled by the course organizers through a 3-day programme (3hrs each day) to equip professionals with in-depth insights in the area.
What you will learn
This training aims to:
1. Discuss the driving forces of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and to heighten prevention and control
2. Aid professionals evaluate the influencers of high incidence of NCDs especially chronic kidney disease in recent times to increase advocacy and fight against it.
3. Review medical and research ethics using case scenarios to enhance professional practice and research conduct.
4. Discuss some ethical dilemma with regards to excellent healthcare and the recent upsurge of medico-legal issues.
5. Enlighten professionals on the Mendeley Referencing Software to enhance professional, academic and research capacity.
6. Help professionals practically grasp the concept of file management in Mendeley Referencing Software for enhanced in-text citation and bibliography inclusion in word documents.
