The incidence of stroke in Africa is among the highest in the world. Every minute, 1 person suffers a stroke. 98% of stroke occurs in hypertensive patients. For every 1.7mg Na+ consumed, blood pressure rises by 5 mmHg from sodium retention. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that we reduce our salt intake to LESS THAN 5 grams per day.
It is difficult to control the amount of salt our patients consume. Therefore our treatments must be based on correcting this sodium retention and to suit our patients needs. Diuretics are very relevant for black populations since this class of medicines can effectively control high blood pressure and with guidelines recommending a thiazide-like diuretic as the drug of choice, we will learn how to “Optimize the Management af a Black Hypertensive Patient Uncontrolled on Amlodipine"
At the end of this training, participants should be able to:
I. Understand the place of diuretics
II. Understand guideline recommendations
III. Know patients' individual needs and categorize those requiring a diuretic.
IV. Understand the rationale in choosing a thiazide-like diuretic for a patient.
