Overview

Course Description

This module focuses on the handling and reception of surgical specimens/samples in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory. It provides guidance on the processes involved in receiving, processing, microscopically examining, and reporting the specimens. The course aims to provide participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle and receive anatomic pathology specimens accurately, safely, and efficiently while emphasizing the importance of proper specimen reception practices and their impact on patient care and laboratory quality.

What you will learn

The Objectives of this module is to:

1. Equip the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude to receive and accession anatomic pathology specimens for analysis and reporting.

2. Enable the MLS to receive and handle anatomic pathology specimens safely and without errors in the laboratory.

3. Develop a clear understanding of the basis of each step taken in the process of specimen reception.

4. Demonstrate appreciation of the effect of specimen handling before arrival in the laboratory on the overall quality of the work produced by the laboratory.

5. Apply the principles taught to effectively receive, accept, and accession specimens arriving in the pathology laboratory.

6. Gain a clear understanding and appreciation of errors that can occur during specimen reception and their effects on patient management and safety.

7. Explain the importance of proper test requisitioning for accurate test analysis and reporting.

8. Recognize and appreciate the contribution of a well-functioning sample reception unit in ensuring the production of high-quality results by the laboratory.
