This Module focuses on the childhood tumour; Retinoblastoma. It begins with a Pre-test, to assess what is already known by the participant, and then continues with the presentation on clinical aspects of the tumour. This is followed by a discussion on the pathology:
i. how to handle an eye specimen suspected to be harbouring Retinoblastoma in the laboratory
ii. the gross features to look out for,
iii. the sections to take on grossing,
iv. the microscopic features to note and
v. how to write a thorough report
The Module closes with a summary and post-test to determine how much learning has been achieved. Further reading material is provided.
By the end of this Module, participants should be able to:
1. Define, Classify and provide epidemiologic information on Retinoblastoma in the West African sub-region
2. Discuss the aetiopathogenesis of Retinoblastoma
3. Describe the typical clinical presentation of Retinoblastoma
4. Enumerate and describe the steps in grossing an enucleation specimen
5. Identify diagnostic features of Retinoblastoma on microscopy
6. Enumerate the important parameters to mention in a comprehensive pathology report for Retinoblastoma
