Professor Richard M.K. Adanu MBChB, MPH, FGCS, FWACS.

Professor Richard MK Adanu is the Rector of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is a Specialist Obstetrician Gynaecologist and Women’s Reproductive Health Epidemiologist. In addition to being a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, he is also a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons and an honorary Fellow of American College of Obstericians and Gynecologists. He graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School and completed his postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. He later obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a Gates scholar and was admitted into the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society. Professor Adanu has extensive experience in the fields of maternal mortality and morbidity reduction, contraceptive use by women and cervical cancer screening and has served locally and internationally as a consultant in these areas. He served as the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Public Health from August 2012 to July 2018 and as the Dean he led a large number of research projects at the school.

In the area of medical education, Professor Adanu has developed several interactive web-based educational materials in Obstetrics and Gynaecology which are used extensively by medical students and several practitioners all over the world. Professor Adanu served as the Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics from 2014 to 2020. His research is in both the clinical and social aspects of women’s health. Professor Richard Adanu has served as a mentor for many Ghanaian and international trainees in both clinical practice and research career development. His research interests are epidemiology of obstetric and gynaecological disorders in Ghana, family planning, cervical cancer screening and maternal injuries. Some of his previous international responsibilities include leading a consortium of 11 African universities to facilitate an educational mobility program funded by the European Union and serving as an external consultant for the Research Capacity Strengthening, Reproductive Health, and Research Department, WHO Geneva. Professor Adanu is widely published in the fields of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Women’s Health with over 120 peer-reviewed publications, several Editorial publications as well chapters in books and technical reports.
