Professor Isaac Kofi Owusu, BSc., MBCh.B., Dip PDM, FWACP, FGCP, is an esteemed Associate Professor and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. Additionally, he holds the position of Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi.
A distinguished alumnus of KNUST, Professor Owusu obtained his BSc in Human Biology and MB, ChB degrees in 1990 and 1993, respectively. His commitment to academic and professional development is evident through his postgraduate diploma in Project Design and Management from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK. Proficient in Internal Medicine, he earned the esteemed title of Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) in 2005. Further enriching his expertise, he pursued a 2-year Fellowship Training in Cardiology at the Cardiovascular Centre, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Hospital in Aalst, Belgium, and later became a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2011.
Professor Owusu's areas of specialization encompass a broad spectrum within cardiology, including heart failure, arrhythmias, echocardiography, cardiac hemodynamics, venous thromboembolism, hypertension, and other cardiovascular risk factors. His commitment to advancing medical knowledge is demonstrated through his role as a principal or co-principal investigator in numerous research projects. He has actively supervised research projects for WACP Fellowship candidates, PhD, and Masters students, resulting in several scientific publications in international journals.
Actively engaged in medical education, Professor Owusu has contributed significantly to various levels of training. He has served as an Examination Officer for the undergraduate program and as a Postgraduate Training Coordinator in the Department of Medicine at KATH, Kumasi. As an External Examiner for the University of Ghana Medical School in Accra and the School of Medical Sciences, University of Cape Coast, he has played a crucial role in evaluating medical students. Additionally, he serves as an Examiner for both the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. Currently, he holds the position of Training Coordinator for the Faculty of Internal Medicine, West African College of Physicians.
Beyond his academic and research contributions, Professor Isaac Owusu is an active member of professional societies, including being the Immediate Past President of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology. He is also a member of the Pan-African Society of Cardiology, the European Society of Hypertension, and the European Society of Cardiology. His leadership and instrumental role in establishing cardiology as a subspecialty in Ghana are evident in his past presidency of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology, contributing significantly to its growth and development.
