Prof. Ernest Yorke is a Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Ghana Medical School and a Senior Specialist Physician at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he leads clinical and academic work in endocrinology, diabetes, and cardio-metabolic disorders. He is a Fellow of both the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Physicians, with formal postgraduate training in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, health administration, and research methodology. His clinical practice and teaching span undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, with extensive involvement in residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and endocrinology.
His research work focuses on diabetes and endocrine-related complications, cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, peripheral arterial disease, and the interaction between chronic metabolic diseases and psychological health. He has led and contributed to multiple nationally funded and collaborative research projects, including studies that informed the development of Ghana’s comprehensive national diabetes guidelines. Prof. Yorke has published widely in peer-reviewed local and international journals and contributed to books and guideline documents relevant to diabetes and internal medicine practice in Ghana and similar settings.
Beyond academia and research, Prof. Yorke has held several leadership and governance roles within the University of Ghana, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and national professional bodies. He has served on statutory and advisory boards, including the Medical and Dental Council and the Ghana Medical Association, and has been actively involved in policy development, accreditation, and capacity-building initiatives related to non-communicable diseases. He is a frequent facilitator and speaker at national and international scientific meetings and continues to contribute to clinical education, guideline dissemination, and health system strengthening in diabetes and endocrine care
He is currently the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and also the President of Diabetes, Endocrine & Metabolic Society of Ghana – (DEMSOG).
