Prof. Dr. Lorna Awo Renner MB.CH.B., Dip. Health Econ, MPH, FRCPCH (UK), CCST (UK), FGCPS, MWACP.

Prof. Dr. Renner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Child Health, University of Ghana Medical School and Consultant Paediatrician at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Accra-Ghana. Her specialty area is Paediatric Oncology. She is the lead clinician in charge of the Paediatric Oncology service at KBTH. She is the lead clinician for clinical care of children with HIV/AIDS at the Korle Bu Hospital, having started the first comprehensive care services for these children in Ghana in July 2004.

She is the Chairperson, Faculty of Child Health, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Coordinator of the Paediatric Oncology subspecialty Fellowship Programme.

She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK), a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, a Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), a Member of the International Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), a Member of the United Kingdom Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG), and a Member of the Paediatric Society of Ghana.

She is a member of the Ghana National Non-Communicable Diseases Steering Committee and the National Childhood Cancer Steering Committee. She is the immediate past Africa Continental President for the International Society for Paediatric Oncology. Prof. Renner is a member of the Board of Trustees of World Child Cancer, a UK-based NGO. She is a founding member of the Board of Trustees for Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana. She is the Chairperson for the Faculty of Paediatrics/Child Health of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons

She is a reviewer of many Journals including the Ghana Medical Journal, Postgraduate Medical Journal, the Journal of Global, the AIDS, Research and Treatment Journal, among others.

She has made oral presentations (including being a plenary speaker) at 38 out of over 78 conferences attended both locally and internationally. Have organized and given talks in over 60 workshops in Ghana on aspects of Childhood Cancer and other Child Health issues.

She is a supervisor of several theses at many levels including MPhil’s, MSc’s, PhD’s and Fellowships. Some of the major projects undertaken by her include:

i. Paediatric Bacterial Meningitis surveillance – a WHO AFRO multi-country project ongoing since June 2001.

ii. IeDEA West Africa HIV collaboration, a multi-centre project involving 7 West African Countries, ongoing since 2006.

iii. Organisation of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) Conference in Africa in Accra, February 2010. Where she raised major funding from the Ministry of Health and pharmaceutical companies and scholarships were made available for participants from several African countries.

iv. Twinning Project between the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, and the Paediatric Oncology Unit, Department of Child Health, Korle Bu Hospital funded by World Child Cancer. Seeks to improve childhood cancer care through training programs for health professionals in Ghana awareness creation about childhood cancers and other support. Started November 2010 and is ongoing.

v. International Society of Paediatric Oncology, Paediatric Oncology in Developing Countries, Wilms Tumour Africa Collaboration. This project seeks to evaluate the implementation of uniform guidelines for the treatment of Wilms tumour in African countries. Started in April 2014.

vi. UNICEF/GHS project as a consultant – Status of Implementation of National Newborn Health Care in Ghana completed July 2016 with publication
