Efua Nyarkoah Benyi (PharmD) BPharm, PharmD

Senior Pharmacist

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

Efua Nyarkoah Benyi is a dedicated and results-oriented Ghanaian pharmacist whose career spans clinical, community, hospital, and industrial pharmacy practice. She is currently a Senior Pharmacist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she provides specialized pharmaceutical care for patients with neurological and endocrine conditions. Her role involves conducting comprehensive medication reviews, monitoring drug therapy, and ensuring the appropriateness, safety, and effectiveness of prescribed treatments. She actively participates in multidisciplinary ward rounds, contributing to collaborative decision-making on patient care alongside medical consultants and other healthcare professionals.

In her capacity at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Efua also serves as a resource person for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes, training pharmacists on the management of neurological and endocrine diseases. She is actively engaged in mentoring and supervising pharmacy interns, PharmD students, and resident pharmacists, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical clinical skills. Her commitment to patient education is evident in her counselling sessions, where she addresses issues such as drug–drug and drug–food interactions, adherence challenges, and side-effect management to improve health outcomes. She is also the focal person for documenting and reporting adverse drug events to both the hospital’s pharmacovigilance unit and the Food and Drugs Authority.

Beyond hospital practice, Efua has served in leadership positions within the community pharmacy sector as a Superintendent Pharmacist for several establishments. In these roles, she managed pharmacy staff, coordinated medicine procurement, oversaw dispensing operations, and implemented quality pharmaceutical care standards. Her earlier career experiences also include internships at major health institutions such as 37 Military Hospital, Cocoa Clinic, and Kaneshie Polyclinic, as well as industrial training at Kinapharma Pharmaceutical Ltd, where she gained insights into medication formulation, compounding, packaging, and quality control processes.

Efua’s academic background is equally robust. She holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Ghana and is currently completing a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) top-up programme at the same institution. She is also pursuing specialization in Clinical Pharmacy at the Ghana College of Pharmacists. Her professional credentials include the Ghana Pharmacy Professional Qualification Examination, a Diabetes Educator Certificate, and training in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from USAID.

Her research interests focus on improving pharmaceutical care in resource-limited settings, with works such as a scoping review on adverse events associated with anticoagulation therapy and studies on the perceived barriers to evidence-based practice among hospital pharmacists. These contributions reflect her dedication to integrating research with practical patient care.

Outside her professional work, Efua enjoys singing, dancing, cooking, and watching football. She continues to demonstrate a commitment to professional excellence, patient advocacy, and the advancement of pharmacy practice in Ghana.
