Dr. Roberta Lamptey is a highly regarded Consultant Family Physician and Diabetologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and a part-time lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School. With a passion for improving diabetes self-management education, Dr. Lamptey’s research is centered on enhancing patient outcomes, particularly at the primary care level in resource-limited settings.

Her current research focuses on structured diabetes self-management education (DSME) and its impact on glycaemic control, especially in low-resource urban settings. She is actively involved as Co-Principal Investigator in the CREATE study, an NIHR-funded project aimed at improving outcomes in cardio-metabolic diseases in Ghana, Kenya, and Mozambique. Dr. Lamptey has published papers in The Lancet and is dedicated to furthering diabetes care in Africa.

Additionally, she serves as the Chair of the Ghana Chapter of the Faculty of Family Medicine, West African College of Physicians (WACP), and is a diabetes expert consultant for Ghana's Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) control program.

Research Interests

Dr. Lamptey’s research primarily explores diabetes self-management education and its efficacy in resource-constrained environments. Her key research projects include:

1. Diabetes self-management education – Needs of providers and patients in urban primary care facilities.

2. Glycaemic control in adults – Structured diabetes self-management education in primary care in Accra, Ghana.

3. Systematic review and meta-analysis – Evaluating the impact of DSME on glycaemic control in newly diagnosed diabetes patients in low-resource settings in Africa.

She is also leading the "Sweet Messages for Sugar Control" study, a COVID-19-related SMS intervention for diabetes management.
