Dr. Josephine Mensah is a distinguished Clinical Pharmacist and Pharmacy Administrator with over 15 years of experience in healthcare. Her career spans roles in clinical practice, pharmacy education, and research, underscoring her commitment to improving patient outcomes and advancing the pharmaceutical profession.
Dr. Mensah holds a PharmD, an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy, and a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). She is also a Specialist Clinical Pharmacist certified by the Ghana College of Pharmacists. Her qualifications are complemented by diplomas in Marketing Management, Human Resources Management, and Financial Management from the Institute of Commercial Management, UK. Additionally, she has completed specialized certifications in Project Management in Global Health, Leadership and Management in Health, Introduction to Epidemiology for Global Health from the University of Washington, and Data Management and Analysis from the University of Ghana.
Since December 2019, Dr. Mensah has been contributing her expertise at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), building on extensive experience gained at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. She is deeply engaged in hospital and community pharmacy practice and has a strong background in mentoring pharmacy students and interns through her role as a lead preceptor and adjunct lecturer.
Dr. Mensah is an active member of professional organizations, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Ghana College of Pharmacists, International Federation of Pharmacists, and the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ghana. She serves on numerous committees at UGMC, including the Infection Prevention Committee, Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee (where she is Vice Chair), and the Patient and Family Centered Care Committee. Her roles also extend to the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists’ International Task Force and UGMC’s Transplant Team. As an advocate for rational medicine use, she has contributed to national initiatives like the Committee for Medication Use Review Implementation in Ghana.
Her research focuses on clinical and social pharmacy, antimicrobial utilization and stewardship, rational medicine use, psychiatry, and infectious diseases. She is actively involved in clinical trials and has published extensively in these areas, reflecting her dedication to advancing pharmaceutical knowledge and practice.
Dr. Mensah’s expertise in Medication Therapy Management and her role as the UGMC Institutional Contact Person for FDA Ghana in Pharmacovigilance underscore her leadership in medication safety and optimization. She is particularly passionate about caring for critically ill patients, especially those with infectious diseases, and brings a nuanced understanding of healthcare challenges in this domain.
Outside her professional life, Dr. Mensah mentors young pharmacists, organizes philanthropic events, participates in church activities, and enjoys spending time with her family and relaxing with a good movie.
