
Dr. Jimmy M. Hangoma is a seasoned professional in the field of pharmacy practice with extensive experience in both academic and clinical settings. He holds a PhD in Pharmacy Practice from Africa Research University and a Master’s in Clinical Pharmacy from the University of Zambia. Additionally, he completed his undergraduate studies in Pharmacy at the University of Zambia. Dr. Hangoma’s education also includes advanced training in natural sciences, which facilitated his entry into the pharmacy program.
Currently, Dr. Hangoma serves as the Head of the Pharmacy Department at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University, where he is responsible for conducting research, lecturing, and reviewing for the ethics committee. His teaching responsibilities span a range of subjects, including basic and clinical pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, pharmacotherapy, and research methodology. He also provides guidance to postgraduate students in research and statistics. In addition to his teaching role, Dr. Hangoma works as a clinical pharmacist at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, where he advises physicians on drug selection, rational drug use, and patient monitoring. He also serves as a preceptor for both postgraduate and undergraduate students.
Dr. Hangoma’s professional portfolio extends beyond academia. He has been a key mentor and facilitator for various national health programs, including HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and COVID-19 case management, where he has provided expertise in the development of national treatment guidelines. His leadership roles also include being a key opinion leader for Reckitt Pharmaceuticals, a speaker for the Hospital Pharmacy Academy, and a member of various health boards and committees such as the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
He has been instrumental in the development and revision of treatment protocols, and his contributions to clinical pharmacology are recognized both locally and internationally. Dr. Hangoma has been honored with several awards, including the Young Achiever Award and the Best Presentation Award at the Quality Improvement Research Conference. He has also been actively involved in publishing research related to pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy in Zambia.
Dr. Hangoma’s professional competencies are complemented by his leadership experience, which includes serving as the President of the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Zambia and his current role as the Vice President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia. He is fluent in English, Tonga, and Nyanja, and is proficient in various software applications including SPSS, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. His interests include outdoor activities, gospel and country music, and making new professional connections.
In addition to his clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Hangoma contributes significantly to postgraduate research supervision and has overseen several MSc and PhD projects, many of which are focused on clinical outcomes in HIV and obstetric care. His research work also includes international collaborations, particularly in pharmacokinetic trials and studies related to maternal health and malnutrition.
