Consultant Cardiologist and Head of the Cardiology Division

Dr. Abdul-Samed Tanko is a Ghanaian medical doctor and consultant cardiologist based at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he serves as the Head of the Cardiology Division. He is also the Medical Director at Brompton Heart and Medical Centre and the Managing Director of Pan Afrique Med Consults Ltd. Dr. Tanko has contributed to academia through his past role as a part-time lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School.

He holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from Santa Clara Medical School in Cuba, where he graduated with a Gold Medal Award. His postgraduate training includes a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health from Merlin/IHE London, a Diploma and MSc in Cardiology from Imperial College London, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Heart Failure from the University of Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre. He also earned language certifications in German from Goethe Institute and French from Shakespeare Language College in Cuba.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tanko has worked in several capacities including as a Senior Resident in Cardiology at Ruhr University Medical School in Germany and as a Principal Medical Officer at the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra. His early medical experience includes serving as a Medical Officer and House Officer at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and as a Medical Intelligence Officer with the Bureau of National Investigations.

His research interests include cardiac involvement in rheumatoid arthritis, atrial fibrillation management, bacterial endocarditis in drug users, and the differential effects of sympathetic nerve stimulation on the isolated heart. Dr. Tanko has also pursued extensive professional development through numerous specialized cardiology courses and congresses, particularly within the European Society of Cardiology.

He is a member of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, and the Ghana Medical Association. He also served as a Trustee of the Covid-19 National Trust Fund. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys reading, football, current affairs, and cooking.
