Cdr (Dr). Diane Afeng-Nkansah is a distinguished family physician and military medical specialist with extensive experience in both clinical practice and medical education. Currently serving at the 37 Military Hospital, she is the physician in charge of the diabetes clinic, which is recognized as a center of excellence in diabetes care in Ghana. In her role, she leads a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals, overseeing patient care, organizing diabetic-specific education, and ensuring high-quality treatment and management of patients with diabetes. She is also a part-time lecturer at the hospital’s postgraduate college, where she teaches and mentors foreign-trained doctors, preparing them for national medical examinations.
Dr. Afeng-Nkansah has also played a significant role in international health, having served as the physician specialist for the Ghana Armed Forces contingent during the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire. During her time there, she managed medical services for military personnel, UN staff, and local populations, including leading humanitarian health outreach in remote areas. Her responsibilities extended to medical evacuations, health screenings, and coordination of humanitarian relief efforts. Her leadership in this role earned her a United Nations Medal of Honour for her contributions to international peace and security.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Afeng-Nkansah has a strong background in medical education and mentoring. She has trained and guided numerous healthcare professionals through her involvement in various mentoring programs, such as the Global Affordable Access to Diabetes Care initiative. Her commitment to professional development is further evidenced by her role as a speaker and trainer in diabetes modules, where she has educated colleagues on epidemiology, prevention, and management of diabetes, in line with global guidelines.
Her academic achievements include a Fellowship in Family Medicine from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, a postgraduate diploma in diabetes, and diplomas in several specialized areas such as military tropical medicine and HIV/AIDS strategic planning. Dr. Afeng-Nkansah’s career reflects her dedication to both clinical excellence and advancing healthcare education, with a strong focus on improving patient outcomes and supporting the professional growth of her peers.
