SYNOPSIS
The challenge of healthcare financing is a global issue, affecting countries and individuals alike. Ghana is no exception, with the government striving to provide sustainable funding for healthcare services. The introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in 2003 aimed to replace the "cash and carry" system and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all Ghanaians. Despite its noble intentions, the NHIS faces significant challenges, including decreasing active membership, financial deficits, and frequent out-of-pocket payments by registered clients at the point of service delivery.
The 2024 Public Lecture will delve into these pressing issues and explore new and innovative approaches to healthcare financing. Our focus is on developing a holistic system that goes beyond the NHIS to ensure that every Ghanaian has access to affordable, quality healthcare.
KEY DISCUSSION POINTS
- Has the NHIS achieved its goals of access, equity, and quality healthcare?
- What other avenues can be explored to reduce reliance on the NHIS?
- Can co-payment models ensure better quality healthcare?
- How can we redefine healthcare coverage to manage expectations realistically?
- What alternative funding sources are viable for Ghanaians?
