Building Capacity In Pathology For Paediatric Oncology In Sub-Saharan Africa

The Department of Pathology of the University of Ghana Medical School and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, has been offering anatomic pathology services since the late 1960s. The Department is currently the only accredited training site in Ghana for residents in Laboratory Medicine of both the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

There are five (5) Consultant General Pathologists in the Department who form the core of the trainers with assistance from two (2) Specialist Pathologists. There are at present a total of seventeen (17) residents at various levels of training with two (2) of them coming from Gambia and Liberia respectively.

The technical work is done by a team of seventeen (17) Biomedical Scientists and Medical Technologists, who have general training in Histo-technology and Cyto-technology.

The Department offers a cytology service with an aspiration room and rapid on-site evaluation of aspirates; a surgical pathology service with routine (H&E) staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry which is done on an automated platform (Roche Ventana Benchmark GX). In addition, the Department offers an autopsy service.

Over the past few years, the Department has developed a strong relationship and partnership with the Department of Child Health of the same institutions to improve the diagnosis of childhood tumours. As part of these efforts, the Department, with the support of the Sanofi-Espoir Foundation has developed a Course in the Diagnosis of Pediatric Cancers, to be offered as Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for Pathologists in Ghana and across the sub-region, as well as a Course in Handling of Pediatric Tumours for Histo-technologists.

We strongly encourage you to actively participate in this training and its complementary modules, which are designed to be completed at your own pace and convenience. We are confident that upon completion, your professional practice will be significantly enhanced. This course, along with the other modules, qualifies you for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points from the Medical and Dental Council, Ghana. Additionally, you will receive a prestigious and highly valuable certificate upon successful completion of all modules.

Welcome!
